It is instructive because of the way Caitanya Candra Prabhu deconstructs Kaunteya’s fallacious arguments where he tries to minimize Manu Samhita because it is an obstacle for feminists. The feminist strategy is that anything that obstructs feminism is targeted and attempts are made to undermine its credibility. You never cease to amaze in how you can distort the meaning of sastra. I think that you are empowered in this way. Not as good as Sankaracarya, mind you. You provide a steady stream of fallacious argumentation that we use as examples for our students. Getting to your latest attempt.

You are putting words in Srila Prabhupada’s mouth. In the purport to SB 6.1.7 where he mentions Manu Samhita he could have said Manu was poison, but he didn’t, you did. In innumerable quotes Srila Prabhupada glorifies Manu Samhita aka Manu Smriti. For example, you quote Caitanya Caritamrta in regard to karma kanda but in that verse and purport there is no mention of Manu Samhita. However, in Srila Prabhupada’s purport to CC (1.6.14–15) he quotes Baladeva Vidyabhusana the Gaudiya Vedanta acarya’s commentary on Vedanta sutra—Govinda Bhasya—wherein Baladeva Vidhya Bhusana accords Manu-smrti special importance as a bhakti sastra. Why? Because Manu Samhita establishes that the Supreme Absolute is a person. Prabhupada quotes Baladeva thusly:

If matter were accepted as the original cause of creation, all the authorized scriptures in the world would be useless, for in every scripture, especially the Vedic scriptures like the Manu-smṛti, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is said to be the ultimate creator. The Manu-smṛti is considered the highest Vedic direction to humanity. Manu is the giver of law to mankind, and in the Manu-smṛti it is clearly stated that before the creation the entire universal space was darkness, without information and without variety, and was in a state of complete suspension, like a dream. Everything was darkness. The Supreme Personality of Godhead then entered the universal space, and although He is invisible, He created the visible cosmic manifestation. In the material world the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not manifested by His personal presence, but the presence of the cosmic manifestation in different varieties is the proof that everything has been created under His direction. When you read it you will understand why it was deleted. It is very instructive:

Caitanya Candra Dasa:

Your argument has now shifted from a purported syllogism to a series of assertions about Manu-smṛti, and neither line of argument establishes your conclusion.

First, your understanding of syllogistic reasoning is incorrect. You say that a syllogism consists of “two true statements (premises)” from which “the final conclusion must also be true.” That is not how syllogistic validity works. Two true premises do not necessarily produce a true conclusion unless the conclusion follows from them logically.

For example:

All cats are animals.

All dogs are animals.

Therefore, all cats are dogs.

Both premises are true. The conclusion is false. The problem is the inference, not the truth of the premises.

Your argument has the same problem:

Manu-saṁhitā is a karma-kāṇḍa text.

Karma-kāṇḍa is described as viṣa, “poison.”

Therefore, Manu-saṁhitā is at least partially poisonous.

The conclusion does not follow from those premises without an additional proposition, namely, that a text classified as karma-kāṇḍa is thereby poisonous, at least in part. You have not established that proposition.

Nor does changing “poisonous” to “at least partially poisonous” solve the problem. You have simply weakened the conclusion without supplying the missing premise. And saying that something “partially poisonous” can still kill you has no bearing on whether Manu-saṁhitā has actually been shown to be poisonous.

Second, the passages you cite do not themselves make the connection you are asserting. SB 6.1.7 identifies Manu-saṁhitā as a karma-kāṇḍa scripture. It does not call Manu-saṁhitā poisonous. CC Madhya 5.24 discusses karma-kāṇḍa and jñāna-kāṇḍa and quotes Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura’s statement that they are a pot of poison for Vaiṣṇavas. It does not mention Manu-saṁhitā.

You are therefore taking a general statement about karma-kāṇḍa and applying it to Manu-saṁhitā without establishing the logical connection between the two.

Third, your conclusion has to be reconciled with the way Śrīla Prabhupāda actually speaks about Manu-saṁhitā.

Prabhupāda repeatedly presents Manu-saṁhitā positively as an authoritative standard. For example:

“The revealed scriptures, like Manu-saṁhitā and similar others, are considered the standard books to be followed by human society.”

“The Manu-saṁhitā is the standard lawbook for humanity, and every human being is advised to follow this great book of social knowledge.”

“The conclusion is that if we want real peace and order in the human society, we must follow the principles laid down by the Manu-saṁhitā and confirmed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa.”

And in the purport to SB 10.4.5, Prabhupāda says:

“This is in accordance with the injunctions of Manu-saṁhitā, but unfortunately Manu-saṁhitā is now being insulted…”

These statements are difficult to reconcile with the claim that Manu-saṁhitā is itself something that Vaiṣṇavas should regard as poisonous.

The Bhagavad-gītā 16.7 purport is particularly relevant because Prabhupāda explicitly appeals to Manu’s injunction concerning the protection of women and presents rejection of that injunction as characteristic of the demoniac mentality. Whatever one’s opinion of the particular social teaching, Prabhupāda is plainly treating the Manu-saṁhitā known under that name as an authoritative source.

Fourth, there is also Prabhupāda’s use of Manu-smṛti through Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa in CC Ādi 1.6.14–15. Baladeva cites Manu-smṛti as authoritative evidence in establishing that the ultimate cause of creation is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I am not claiming that Baladeva calls Manu-smṛti a “bhakti-śāstra.” He does not. My point is that the Manu-smṛti passage he cites is functioning as authoritative śāstric evidence for a theological proposition concerning the personal nature of the Absolute.

Baladeva also cites the Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa:

yad vai kiñcana manur avadat tad bheṣajam

“Whatever Manu has said is certainly the cure for the ills of this world.”

This makes the blanket characterization of Manu-smṛti as “poisonous” problematic.

Now you have introduced a second argument. You say that we do not possess “the original Manu-saṁhitā by Manu,” that the present text is “a derivative and interpolated text,” and that it contains teachings that Vaiṣṇavas should reject as “deeply poisonous.” You then ask whether, when Prabhupāda speaks of Manu-saṁhitā, he is really referring to some version other than the one we have.

But these are assertions, not demonstrations.

You have not identified the alleged interpolations. You have not demonstrated which passages are interpolated. You have not shown that the Manu-smṛti known to the traditional commentators is substantially different from the Manu-smṛti we possess. And you have not produced a Gauḍīya ācārya who says that the current Manu-smṛti is not the original Manu-smṛti.

That distinction is important. There may certainly be textual variants in the transmission of Manu-smṛti. That is not the same proposition as saying that the received text is substantially a later derivative text that cannot be identified with the Manu-smṛti cited by Prabhupāda.

The traditional commentarial evidence is relevant here. Manu-smṛti is not a text that suddenly appears in its present form in the modern period. It has a long commentarial tradition, with commentators working from a recognizable text across many centuries. There are certainly textual questions to investigate, but the mere possibility of interpolation does not establish substantial corruption.

The evidence I have cited also raises serious questions about the claim that the present text is fundamentally different from the earlier Manu-smṛti. Patrick Olivelle, for example, says of the sections on marital law and inheritance in Chapter Nine that they are “remarkably free of obvious redactoral interventions.” V. P. Kane likewise states that the text of Manu on which Medhātithi commented was “practically the same that we have now.”

Again, this does not prove that every verse in the present Manu-smṛti is original. It does demonstrate that the sweeping claim that the received text is simply a derivative and substantially interpolated version requires much more evidence than you have provided.

There is also the wider continuity of the Manu textual tradition. The readings found in the old commentators substantially correspond, and Yājñavalkya-smṛti shows very close dependence upon Manu. This gives us evidence for an ancient and relatively stable textual core.

But even before getting into all of that, the burden of proof remains with you. You are the one introducing the distinction between “the Manu-smṛti Prabhupāda praised” and “the Manu-smṛti we have today.” You therefore need to demonstrate that distinction.

Otherwise your argument becomes circular:

Prabhupāda praises Manu-smṛti → the present Manu-smṛti contains things you consider objectionable → therefore Prabhupāda must have meant a different Manu-smṛti.

That does not establish that he meant a different text. It merely assumes it in order to reconcile his statements with your conclusion.

Finally, your original claim was that people promoting Manu-saṁhitā as a primary reference are “poisoning ISKCON.” Your syllogism does not establish that conclusion. Your subsequent qualification that Manu-smṛti is “at least partially poisonous” does not establish it either. And your later appeal to a possibly interpolated textual tradition does not establish it unless you first demonstrate which portions are interpolated and why the portions being cited should be rejected.

So there are really two separate questions here.

First: Does “Manu-saṁhitā is karma-kāṇḍa” plus “karma-kāṇḍa is viṣa” logically prove that Manu-saṁhitā is poisonous?

No. Your syllogism is invalid.

Second: Is the received Manu-smṛti so substantially different from the original that Prabhupāda’s positive statements about Manu-smṛti cannot be applied to the text known by that name?

You have asserted this, but you have not demonstrated it.

And until those two points are established, the much stronger claim that those who regard Manu-saṁhitā as an authoritative reference are “poisoning ISKCON” has not been demonstrated either.

The following exchange recently took place on social media between Kaunteya Prabhu and Caitanya Candra Prabhu.
